Stretched Limousines

limousine (or limo) is a luxury sedan or saloon car generally driven by a chauffeur and with a partition between the driver and the passenger compartment. Limousines often have a lengthened wheelbase.
It was originally an enclosed automobile with open driver's seat.[1] It is named after a type of cloak and hood that was worn by the inhabitants of the Limousin region that later resembled the covering of a carriage and much later used to describe an automobile body with a permanent top that extended over the open driver's compartment.[2][3]
In modern use, a limousine is a luxury sedan or saloon car, especially one with a lengthened wheelbase or driven by achauffeur. The chassis of a limousine may have been extended by the manufacturer or by an independent coachbuilder. These are called "stretch" limousines and are traditionally black or white. Limousines are usually liveried vehiclesdriven by professional chauffeurs. As the most expensive form of automobile ground transportation, limousines are culturally associated with wealth or power and are commonly cited as examples of conspicuous consumption. Among the less wealthy, limousines are often hired during special events (most commonly weddingsproms, and bachelor parties).
While some limousines are owned by individuals, many are owned by governments to transport senior politicians, by large companies to transport executives, and by broadcasters to transport guests.[citation needed] Most stretch limousines, however, operate as livery vehicles, providing upmarket competition to taxicabs. Builders of stretch limousines purchase stock cars from manufacturers and modify them, and most are in the United States and Europe and cater mainly to limousine companies. Few stretch limousines are sold new to private individuals. In addition to luxuries, security features such as armoring and bulletproof glass are available.
The first automobile limousine, built in 1902, was designed so the driver sat outside under a covered compartment.[5] The wordlimousine is derived from the name of the French region Limousin, because this covered compartment physically resembled the raised hood of the cloak worn by the shepherds there. An alternate etymology has the chauffeur wearing a Limousin-style cloak in the open driver's compartment, for protection from the weather.[6][7]
The first “stretch limousine” was created in Fort Smith, Arkansas around 1928 by a coach company named Armbruster. These cars were primarily used to transport famous “big band” leaders, such as Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, and their bands and equipment. These early stretch limousines were often called “big band buses”.[7]
In 1916, the Society of Automobile Engineers defined a limousine as: "a closed car seating three to five inside, with driver's seat outside." A berline was defined as "a limousine having the driver's seat entirely inclosed", while a brougham was defined as "a limousine with no roof over the driver's seat."[8]
In German-speaking countries, a Limousine is simply a sedan, while a lengthened-wheelbase car is called Stretch-Limousine.

Rolls Royce Phantom

In the world of art, the Baroque period is often characterized as Renaissance with the volume turned up to 11. In the same vein, the Rolls-Royce Phantom is a luxury sedan with levels of opulence, prestige and grandiosity dialed up to the maximum degree.
Its imposing exterior imparts elegance and aggression in equal measures. Looking much like the façade of an ancient Greek temple (the two are also similar in scale), an oversized grille highlights the front of the Phantom. It is crowned by Rolls-Royce's distinctive Spirit of Ecstasy badge, which can be retracted at the touch of a button to protect it against thieves, souvenir-seekers and disgruntled 99 percenters.
Inside, the hand-built cabin is every bit as decadent and over-the-top as one would expect. Between 15 and 18 hides are used in each Phantom and every one is checked by hand for blemishes before laser equipment is used to assist in laying out the pattern pieces. The interior of the Phantom is made up of 450 pieces of leather, which are cut by a computer-guided knife.
About six times a year, the manager of the interior wood trim meets the supplier to select personally the veneers for the Phantom. This painstaking process ensures that the highest quality veneers of the correct color and grain characteristics are chosen.
The navigation system was redesigned for the latest model year and now boasts an enlarged 8.8-inch display screen. It features 3D maps with landscape topography, guided tours and enhanced points of interest, as well as composite route planning. Front, rear and top-view camera systems are standard to facilitate parking the large-as-a-barge Phantom.
Unique cabin touches include reverse-hinged rear "suicide doors," pop-out umbrellas hidden in the doors, hydraulic motors to close the rear doors and a "power reserve dial" instead of tachometer, which indicates how much of the engine's output is left available to the driver.
In keeping with Rolls-Royce tradition, the Phantom uses an enormous naturally-aspirated twelve-cylinder engine. It displaces 6.75 liters and produces 453 horsepower at 5350 rpm and 531 pound-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. New for the latest model is an eight-speed automatic transmission, which helps the rear-drive Phantom waft from zero-to-60 mph in under six second despite the sedan's massive 5,800-pound curb weight. Fuel economy is about what one would expect - 11 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

Bentley Continental Flying Spur

The weather broke the day the Bentley Flying Spur arrived. Instead of scorched, grippy blacktop, the roads slithered with an emulsion of tree pollen and diesel, just the thing for a big luxury saloon with 616bhp – yes, you did read that correctly.
I can’t say I was particularly looking forward to driving Crewe’s new super limo aimed largely at the Chinese chauffeur market, which already takes the Lion’s share of Flying Spurs. With the air springs dialled back by 10 and 17 per cent front and rear, anti-roll bars softened by 13 and 15 per cent respectively and suspension bushes 25 per cent softer, I wondered about the wisdom of fitting the most powerful-yet version of Ferdinand’s Piëch’s W12 engine, which first debuted at the 2001 Tokyo Show. The 1966 Dodge Charger 7-litre V8 Hemi mustered 435bhp, which even at idle, would rock the entire car on its heavy duty springs. Wayward didn’t even begin to describe a full power run in that epochal muscle car and as for stopping on its tiny drum brakes... Was this 200mph Bentley going to be the 21st century update on this white-knuckle ride?
The first Flying Spur was a handsome and more upright version of the gorgeous S1 Continental coupé, launched in 1957 with its name derived from the family crest of Arthur Talbot Johnstone, the MD of HJ Mulliner. The second version was a similarly conceived, if less handsome car, launched in Venice in 2005.
